UNO's most accomplished coach, Maestri, returns
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former New Orleans baseball coach Ron Maestri is coming out of retirement to coach the Privateers on a field named after him.
Introduced as the Privateers' new coach on Tuesday, the 72-year-old Maestri says he's ready for "the challenge of bringing back that UNO pride."
Maestri coached UNO's only College World Series team in 1984. He went 518-247-1 at UNO from 1972 to 1985, a period when UNO rose from Division II to Division I. He qualified for nine NCAA tournaments — seven in Division I. He remained at UNO as athletic director until 2000.
Maestri's hiring follows an unsettled period at UNO, which applied to switch to Division III, then to Division II, before a new administration committed to remaining in Division I.
UNO went 7-44 last season.
