Trojans upset by H.L. Bourgeois
For the second time this district season, the Central Lafourche boys’ basketball team was beaten at home.
The Trojans had their five-game winning streak snapped on Friday night when they lost 61-54 to H.L. Bourgeois in Mathews.
The loss drops Central Lafourche to 18-5 on the season and 6-2 in district play – one game out of first place.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game going in,” Central Lafourche coach Mark Sanders said. “We told them before the game that they were going to be up for the challenge, and they were. Unfortunately, they made more things happen than we did and we paid the penalty.”
The Braves endured a slow start to conquer the win. Central Lafourche held an early first quarter lead – an advantage that vanished when the Braves closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 17-12 lead.
That lead ballooned to nine in the second quarter when the Braves used balanced scoring to go into the lockers ahead 29-20.
In the final half, Central Lafourche cut the lead to as little as four, but every run they mustered, H.L. Bourgeois answered to secure the win.
“That was the best we’ve competed all season,” Braves coach Andrew Caillouet said. “We knew we had it in us – we just needed to compete and not take no for an answer this time.”
Central Lafourche’s win was a bad ending to a week that started with a 54-48 win over Thibodaux.
The loss sends the Trojans into a huge week on a bad note.
Central Lafourche played East St. John on Tuesday with no score available at press-time – a game that likely will decide the district championship.
They host South Lafourche on Friday.
While the Trojans’ boys hope to upset the Wildcats to win district, the Lady Trojans girls are still searching for answers.
Central Lafourche’s long losing streak extended this past week with the team losing 46-36 to Thibodaux and 38-26 to H.L. Bourgeois.
