Trojans Roar In Huge Win

It wasn’t easy, but the Central Lafourche football team is going to the playoffs.

The Trojans scored the postseason-clinching win on Thursday night against East St. John in thrilling fashion, using a last-second comeback to secure the victory.

East St. John led the Trojans 33-29 with 33 seconds to play. On a fourth down play, senior quarterback Austin Aucoin hit Gage Bourg on a 15-yard touchdown strike to seal the deal and secure a 36-33 win.

Trojans coach Keith Menard said he couldn’t be happier for his team, which has set out since the beginning of the season to reach the playoffs.

“I couldn’t be happier for the kids. We’ve played our tails off all season,” Menard said. “East St. John battled us and gave us a run. But we never quit. We never backed down and we achieved the goal that we set out to achieve.”

It surely wasn’t easy.

East St. John came out of the gates firing, using two-straight touchdown runs from Marquise Darensbourg to go in front 12-0.

But the Trojans battled back in a big way, using 23-straight points to take a 23-12 advantage midway through the third quarter.

Aucoin got the scoring started in the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. The Trojans also got a safety and two scores from halfback Nelton Allen in the onslaught. One of the touchdown drives was aided by an interception from Anfernee Poindexter, which was returned to the Wildcats 2-yard-line.

“What a huge play,” Menard said. “That was big for us in this game.”

Down 11, East St. John made a flurry of its own, using two-straight scores from C.J. Turner to go on top 26-23 with 7 minutes left in the game.

Behind for the first time in the second half, Aucoin made a huge play, hitting Kenneth Poindexter on a 54-yard bomb to put the Trojans ahead 29-26 with 4:50 left in the game.

But East St. John drove straight down the field and scored again to go up 33-29 with 3 minutes in the game to set up the Trojans final scoring drive and last-second, playoff-clinching touchdown.

With the win, the Trojans will be in the Class 5A Playoffs. They’ll learn their exact seed and opponent on Sunday.
