Trojans get back on track

After losing a key district game to East St. John last Friday night, the Central Lafourche boys’ basketball team entered this week knowing it had a very small margin of error if it wanted to stay alive in the race for a district championship.

Seven days later, that’s still the case, but the team is now hot – fresh off an undefeated week.

The Trojans are now 15-4 on the season and 3-1 in district after beating South Lafourche last Tuesday and Destrehan last Friday.

Against both the Tarpons and Wildcats, the Trojans led throughout, trumping their cross-parish rivals 70-60 and besting Destrehan 56-47.

“We didn’t play our best against East St. John,” Trojans coach Mark Sanders said. “We refocused ourselves and knew that we needed to get back to the basics, and I think we did a pretty good job of that.”

For the Trojans, the Destrehan game was probably a more decisive win than the scoreboard indicated.

Central Lafourche led by four after the first quarter and nine at halftime, using balanced scoring to keep the Wildcats in check.

Lionel Batiste led the Trojans in offense in the win on Friday night, scoring 19 points.

In the second quarter, the Trojans continued to plug away, stretching the lead to double digits with a 39-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Wildcats made a run in the fourth, but couldn’t take the lead.

With two wins under their belts, the Trojans will now aim to take their momentum on the road.
Central Lafourche played at Terrebonne on Tuesday with no score available at press-time. They will take on Hahnville in Boutte on Friday.

While the Trojans’ boys enjoyed a perfect week, the Lady Trojans’ tough season continued.

The Lady Trojans lost a pair of lopsided games this week, falling 67-14 to South Lafourche and 64-2 against Destrehan.

With the losses, Central Lafourche is now 2-16 on the season and 0-6 in district. Like the boys, the Lady Trojans were at Terrebonne last night and will play Hahnville on Friday in a road game.
