The wisdom and insights of others can help us become fully alive

I enjoy reflecting on the wisdom of people who have given us insights into holistic living. St. Irenaeus once said, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive. To be alive consists in beholding God.” This column is dedication to everyone who wants to take the risk of becoming fully alive.

“There is within each of us a potential for goodness beyond our imagining: for giving that seeks no reward, for listening without judgment, for loving unconditionally.” (Elizabeth Kubler-Ross)

“People of character do the right thing, not because they think it will change the world but because they refuse to be changed by the world.” (Michael Josephson)

“Character is simply habit long continued.” (Plutarch)

“Judge people not by their opinions, but by what their opinions have made of them.” (Georg Christoph Lichtenberg)

“If you want to be thought of as a solid, reliable pillar of your community when you’re 50, you can’t be an irresponsible, corner-cutting exploiter at 25. You determine your reputation by deciding who and what you are and by keeping that lofty vision of yourself in mind, even when you’re having a rip-roaring good time.” (William Raspberry, Journalist)

“The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don’t know what to do.” (John Holt)

“The right time to show your good character is when you are pestered by somebody weaker than you.” (Buddha)

“You can easily judge the character of individuals by how they treat those who can do nothing for them.” (James D. Miles)

“To have character is to be big enough to take life on.” (Mary Caroline Richards)

“We are different one from the other. But we are all bound together by a single premise – that every individual counts. We each have a right to be judged not by where we come from or by who our parents are, but by our own actions and character.” (Madeleine Albright)

“Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wing, and only character endures.” (Horace Greeley)

“Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather look to them with full hope as they arise. God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in his arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting father who cared for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.” (St. Francis de Sales)

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” (Dale Carnegie)

“Courage is like a muscle. It's weak until it's worked out. But it doesn't take long to build this courage muscle into a strong, fit, powerful force!” (Lisa Jimenez)

This quote from Psalm 46:10 can be your entranceway into living in the present moment, if you are willing to slow down: “Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am. Be still and know. Be still. Be.” Fr. Richard Rohr

“Happiness keeps you sweet, trials keep you strong, sorrows keep you human, failures keep you humble, success keeps you glowing, but only God keeps you going.” (Author unknown)

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” (Author unknown)
