St. Francis’ prayers can help us grow in the spiritual life

St. Francis’ prayers can help us grow in the spiritual life

I attended a Lenten Mission and the presenter gave everyone a copy of a meditation on the Lord’s Prayer by St. Francis of Assisi. I found it inspiring so I’m passing it on for your spiritual growth.

Our Father most holy, our Creator and Redeemer, our Savior and our Comforter.

Who art in Heaven with the angels and the saints, bathing them in your light that your love, dwelling within them may enlighten them that they may be filled with your joy. You are the supreme, eternal good, and all goodness comes from you.

Hallowed be Thy Name, may our knowledge of you become ever clearer, that we may appreciate the extent of your favors, the length of your promises, the height of your majesty, and the depth of your judgments.

Thy Kingdom come, so that you may reign in us by your grace, and bring us to your kingdom, where we will see you clearly, love you perfectly and enjoy your company forever.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven that we may love you with our whole heart by always thinking of you, with our whole soul by always wanting you, with our whole mind by directing all our intentions to you, and with our whole strength by spending all our energies in your service. May we love our neighbors as ourselves, drawing them to your love, rejoicing in their good fortunes, and caring for them in their misfortunes.

Give us this day our daily bread, your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that we may remember and appreciate how much he loved us, and everything he said, did, and suffered.

And forgive us our trespasses, for we know that in your immeasurable mercy you forgive us, through the suffering and death of your beloved Son.

As we forgive those who trespass against us; enable us, Lord, to forgive perfectly without reservation any wrong that has been committed against us. Strengthen our hearts so we can truly love our enemies, praying for them without ever wanting to return evil for evil, but serving you in everyone.

And lead us not into temptation, not only from obvious and persistent temptations, but also those hidden or come suddenly when our guard is down.

But deliver us from evil, past, present or future. Amen.

St. Francis also wrote the following Canticle: Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through Brother Sun, who brings the day. You give light through him. He is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars in the heavens. You have made them precious and beautiful.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance.

Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water. She is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.

Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive out of love for you, through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for you, Most High, will crown them.

Be praised, my Lord, for Sister Death, from whom no one living can escape. Woe to those who die in their sins. Blessed are those that she finds doing your will. No second death can do them harm.

Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility.
