The Cut Off Youth Center will host the Sole Survivors 5K, a zombie themed run, on Saturday, October 19. The event will take place on the COYC grounds where runners will race for survival through a zombie filled course.
Runners will wear flag football vests and with three flags. Zombies will be placed strategically around the course and will attempt to grab a runner’s flag, thus taking away his lifelines. Those who make it to the finish line with at least one lifeline remaining will be entered into a prize drawing.
Throughout the course runners will face mud pits, small-scale obstacles, unbeaten paths and more. Runners who do not want to be chased by zombies can opt to not wear vests and will be left alone. Anyone wishing to push strollers or take the course at a slower, safer pace can do so. There will be no timing on the course.
Zombies will be in charge of creating their own gruesome costume and can enter into a contest for the best theme, look, makeup, etc. Zombies are asked to arrive no later than 9 a.m. on race day in order to receive directions and get placed into their zones.
All runners and zombies are invited to celebrate together afterwards in the decontamination zone, which will include drinks, food (being sold to raise funds), entertainment and more. Both runners and zombies are needed to make this event a success. Prize drawings will be held for all participants.
The operations cost for the Cut Off Youth Center is $500 daily. The Sole Survivors 5K will be soliciting for sponsorships and prize donations for the event. All profits raised will be contributed to the COYC.
Registration forms can be picked up at the COYC or The Lafourche Gazette. Visit www.facebook.com/sole.survivors.14 to download one online. Checks should be made payable to the Cut Off Youth Center.
Early registration, with guarantee of a t-shirt on race day, is due by September 20. Cost is $25 for runners and $20 for zombies. Late registration will not guarantee a t-shirt on race day and will increase by $5 per category.
