What began as an idea to meet the public’s demand for more flexible shelter hours has turned into a series of successful Saturday openings, with the latest one scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon June 6 at 934 Highway 3185, Thibodaux.
Along with offering Saturday adoption hours, the opening will also bring to a close a “pick your price” adoption fees event as well.
“We are having a kitten and cat ‘pick your price’ event for qualified adopters,” Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter Manager Hilary Knight said.
The typical adoption fee for any cat or kitten is $50, which includes all age appropriate vaccines, combo test, microchip, and spay/neuter.
Through Saturday’s open house adoption event, LPAS is allowing adopters to bring home a new kitten or cat for a price of their choosing.
“I’d like to also encourage residents to sign-up for the low cost spay/neuter program,” Knight said. “By fixing your own cat or a cat in your community, you are saving countless lives.”
Entering its fifth month of offering Saturday hours, officials with the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter (LPAS) have seen a number of successful adoptions of cats and dogs.
When paired with recent off-site adoptions, Knight said the shelter has adopted out around 40 cats and dogs through these events since February.
While puppies and dogs are being adopted out on a regular basis, kittens and cats are still lagging behind a bit, according to Knight.
Knight said she’s hopeful residents take advantage of this opportunity to adopt a pet and asks anybody who is interested in volunteering to assist her at the shelter on Saturday to call her at (985) 446-3532.
“I want to encourage anyone over the age of 18 to contact us to see how you can assist us with our efforts here at the shelter,” she said.
