Seussical, Jr. lights up the stage with youth actors
Dru Collins practices her moves for her role of the Cat in the Hat in this weekend's production.
A children’s theatre production of Seussical, Jr. will be presented on July 26, 27 and 28 by the South Louisiana Center for the Arts, Inc. (SoLa).
A vast group of young actors will present a musical retelling of Dr. Seuss’s beloved children’s stories. The play, which features music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics of Lynn Ahrens, is based on their book, which was conceived by them with Eric Idle.
Local actress Dru Collins will perform the lead position of the Cat in the Hat. She has performed in various youth-based productions since the age of five.
“I love musicals. I started acting in children’s plays 10 years ago and have grown a lot since the beginning. It helps to build speaking skills and keeps me from freaking out when I have to do public speaking projects for school,” she said.
Now at the age of 15, Collins boasts an extensive actor’s resume including productions such as The Jungle Book, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Noodle Rat Rotten Hat, Murder by Indecision, Fairy Tale Court Room and The Adventures of Mr. Toad.
Collins and more than 40 youth actors will encapsulate the audience in their performance of Seussical, Jr., directed by Heather Dahl. The production will last approximately one and a half hours and will be held at the Terrebonne High School auditorium in Houma on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 at 7 p.m. A Sunday matinee will take place on July 28 at 2 p.m.
“Younger kids really enjoy the productions because they’re bright, filled with singing and dancing and are just all around fun. They even get to take pictures with the cast members after the performance,” Collins said.
Tickets will be sold at the door prior to each performance. Children’s tickets are $7 each and adult tickets are $10. For more information contact SoLa at 985-876-2222.
