September is National Suicide Awareness & Prevention Month
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Gros-Guidry Post 8538, Larose, would like to everyone that September is National Suicide Awareness & Prevention Month.
While suicide is a tragedy in all respects, it is especially alarming that the suicide rate of our military service members surpasses the suicide rate in the general population. Too many of those of our special service members commit suicide daily, whether during deployment or post-deployment.
As friends and families, we can learn more about the warning signs of depression and risky behavior to prevent Veteran suicide.
The Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255, press 1, is available 24/7, text at 838255; also the militarycrisisline.net, all of which are confidential. AfterDeployment.org provides interactive videos, resources, assessments, and more information focusing on PTSD, anger, depression, and other topics.
Suicide is preventable. During Suicide Prevention Month and throughout the year, we can show support to those in need and their loved ones through education and by spreading the word about these and other confidential resources.
We cannot afford to lose our Veterans when they have given our country their best.
