Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, Golden Meadow Chief of Police Reggie Pitre, and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Mattews announced deputies have secured a handgun after a student at Golden Meadow Upper Elementary School discovered it in his book bag. The student reportedly notified a teacher immediately after discovering the firearm in his bag, and a school resource officer secured the weapon.

Dr. Matthews, stated, “The teacher and administration at Golden Meadow Upper Elementary School followed all of our protocol for dealing with these types of instances.”

At this time it is believed the student did not have knowledge of the firearm in his bag, and an investigation is underway into how the weapon ended up there. No other information is available at this time as the investigation is underway. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
