Pointe-aux-Chenes Tribe community gains modern pump station

At the southern portion of Lafourche Parish in lower Pointe-aux-Chenes, is the traditional village of primarily the Chitimacha, but also Atakapas, Biloxi and Choctaw - all farmers, fishermen and hunters.

To manage rising water levels, the community operates with one Lafourche Parish pump station; however, the original eighteen-inch pump became worn after many years of use.

“It was time to upgrade the manual pump to something more efficient and effective. We installed a larger thirty-inch pump system that automatically kicks on, utilizing technology to manage safe water levels,” said Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle.

A team of public works employees from Bayou Blue and other field offices were able to complete the project in-house. Residents commented that their yards have remained dry despite the constant rain we have had with the new pump station in place.

“The Pointe-aux-Chenes Tribe Community is an important part of our history and our future. They live off land that has been in their families for generations, and we must preserve their way of life any way that we can,” said Cantrelle.
