Parish Signs Contract for Solid Waste and Disposal Services
Mathews, Louisiana - Officials with Lafourche Parish Government have announced a five-year agreement with Progressive Waste Solutions of LA, Inc. (PWS) for solid waste and disposal services for the unincorporated areas of Lafourche and towns of Lockport and Golden Meadow.
The contract, effective Jan. 1, will see PWS providing semi-automated collection services for the above areas through 2019.
All of the parish's current solid waste customers will receive a 95-gallon wheeled cart. The distribution of these carts will take place between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2015, during the transition from manual to semi-automated collection.
The new pick up system, considered one of the most-efficient in use today by a number of industry experts, offers several benefits such as quieter operation, reduction in wind-blown litter, and the ability to roll the cart versus carrying garbage to the curb.
According to the Department of Solid Waste's Manager Jerome Danos, residents will simply roll the cart to the curb where a garbage truck featuring an attachment arm will lift the cart, "tipping" the contents into the truck before returning the empty cart back to the curb.
"We expect the new cart system to help beautify our parish. It will enhance our quality of life and give us an opportunity to keep our parish cleaner and safer," Jerome Danos said.
Lafourche Parish Government is providing this semi-automated collection at zero additional cost to customers, and there is no expectation of a need for an increase in sales tax to pay for these enhanced services.
