Parish president gets first-hand look at area levee projects
Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle was on hand Tuesday afternoon with officials from the South Lafourche Levee District and the Terrebonne Conservation and Levee District to see firsthand the progress being made on area levees.
Cantrelle visited the site in lower Pointe aux Chenes where the “Reach K” segment of the Morganza to the Gulf project is set to begin in the next month as an approximate 1,800-foot section of levee will be upgraded with trucked in dirt to a near 10-foot elevation.
This segment, which should be completed by year’s end, will eventually meet up with “Reach L” which will tie into the South Lafourche levee system in the Larose/Cut Off area.
Permits are in hand for the entire two segments which will span some 10 miles once completed.
“Thanks to the boards, directors and employees of the South Lafourche and Terrebonne Levee Districts who are working hard to see this through to completion,” said Cantrelle.
“It was great to see in person the progress being made to provide flood and storm protection for the citizens of Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes. I know this permit was a long time coming but now that it’s in hand, we will soon see better protection for south Louisiana,” said Cantrelle.
