Parish may acquire Delta Farms Boat Launch
At Tuesday’s public meeting in Mathews, the Lafourche Parish Council introduced an ordinance to buy a boat launch along the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose.
Councilman Daniel Lorraine’s recent assertion that the purchase of a launch on the Delta Farms Road was “pretty much a done deal” came to pass as the parish has proposed to spend $310,000 to buy the property owned by the family of Ken Mercer.
The launch, which was used by many boaters to access fishing destinations along the Intracoastal Waterway in the Larose area, has been closed in recent months with a prominent “For Sale” sign fronting the property.
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is using some of the property as a staging area for a project to improve flood protection in that area. That project will end soon.
Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said an agreement has been reached with the Mercer family and that the deal will be done in 30-60 days.
“We plan to make this a first-class launch, with cameras and lighting,” said Cantrelle.
Reggie Bagala, Director of Community Services, said that the property is in the process of being surveyed.
“It’s actually eight to ten little rectangles of property. We are trying to go through the attorney now and hope to make it functional and open as soon as possible,” said Bagala.
At the next public meeting on August 23, the Council will vote on the ordinance which calls for a supplemental appropriation in the 2016 parish budget from the Recreation Fund.
