NOAA oil spill restoration plan: meetings for public comment

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal-state oversight team has released an $8.8 billion plan to restore Gulf of Mexico areas damaged by the 2010 oil spill and compensate the public for pre-restoration loss of natural resources and services.

Evening meetings are scheduled across the Gulf and in Washington for public comment on the 690-page plan posted Monday in seven files on the Gulf Spill Restoration website.

Louisiana meetings are Oct. 19 in Houma and Oct. 22 in New Orleans.

Mississippi's is Oct. 20 in Long Beach.

Comments also can be mailed or sent online.

Money includes $1 billion that BP provided soon after the spill and another $7.1 billion under a settlement finalized Monday. Authorities say there's up to $700 million more to deal with currently unknown damages.
