Nicholls grad, Houma native, well-known figure named vice-chair of LWFC for 2020

A Nicholls graduate and Houma native was named vice-chair of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission for 2020.

Jerri Smitko was named to the position during the Commission's January meeting in Baton Rouge.

At the same meeting, Bill Hogan, of Ruston, was named chair of the LWFC.

Smitko is a well-known figure locally. A graduate of Nicholls and then Tulane law school, she is an attorney and the owner of Smitko Law, APLC in Houma.

Smitko was special legal counsel to Terrebonne Consolidated Government from 1992-98 and the assistant parish attorney from 1988-92.

She has served on various boards throughout her career and has been active in the community, including an attempt at becoming Terrebonne Parish's Sheriff this past fall.

Smitko is a member of the American Bar Association, Louisiana and Terrebonne Parish bar associations and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

She served in the Louisiana Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve until her honorable discharge in 1985.
