Nicholls football completes 2016 recruiting class

THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University head football coach Tim Rebowe released the names of the 2016 recruiting class on Wednesday afternoon at the Colonels' Signing Day Press Conference at the Harold J. Callais Memorial Recreation Center.

Rebowe, in his second season at the helm of the Colonel program, duplicated his recruiting formula from his first class as 23 of the 26 student-athletes are from Louisiana. Last season, Rebowe's inaugural 26-person class consisted of all Louisiana natives.

The 20 signees from high schools are all from the Pelican State and are headed by 12 all-state recipients.
Seven players earned first-team accolades in their career: Stefano Guarisco (Berwick, La./Central Catholic), Laryon James (Baton Rouge, La./ University High), Sully Laiche (Gramercy, La./ Lutcher), Joe Oliver (New Orleans/ Archbishop Rummel), Ben St. Pierre (Gramercy, La./Lutcher), Aquindas Steib (St. James, La./St. James) and Evan Veron (LaPlace, La./Riverside Academy), one garnered second-team -- Tyrin Arceneaux (LaPlace, La./ St. Charles Catholic) and four received honorable mention -- Chase Fourcade (Metairie, La./Archbishop Rummel), Arron McKenney (St. James, La./St. James), Anfernee Poindexter (Raceland, La./Central Lafourche) and Dontrell Taylor (White Castle, La./ White Castle).

Rounding out the high school signees are Christian Booker (New Orleans/De La Salle), Cameron Carrier (Zachary, La./Zachary), Devin Edinburgh (New Orleans/ Edna Karr), Darren Evans (Baton Rouge, La./Glen Oaks), Marquell Hollins (Covington/La., Covington), Kryan Irvin (Darrow, La./East Ascension), Kevin Johnson (New Orleans/Sophie B. Wright) and Alec Naquin (Thibodaux, La./E.D. White) – who earned eitherall-metro and all-district accolades.

In addition to the high school recruits, the Colonels added six transfers. Coming from FBS programs are Brandon Godfrey (New Orleans/John Curtis/Tulane) and Tevin Lawson (Denham Springs, La./Denham Springs HS/TCU).

Signing from the JUCO ranks are Marcel Andry (New Orleans/St. Augustine/East Mississippi CC), Eddie Houston (Newton, Miss./Newton HS/East Central CC), Ronald Ollie (Shubuta, Miss./Wayne County HS/East Mississippi CC) and Josh Stevens (Ormond Beach, Fla./Seabreeze HS/Merced College).

Of the 26 high school signees, 12 are expected to play on offense, 13 are defensive players and one joins Nicholls as an athlete.

The Colonels added one quarterback, three running backs, two wide receivers, a tight end and five offensive linemen.

On defense, Nicholls signed five linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs.

The Colonels will begin spring practice on Friday, Feb. 26, and their annual Spring Game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22.
