New Lafourche jail expected to open in 2017
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said last week while addressing the Lafourche Chamber of Commerce that four to five sites have been identified as possible places for the new Lafourche Parish jail that may be completed by 2017.
Webre said a jail coordinator has been hired and planning and external advisory committees have been meeting to work out details for the 600-bed, $30 million jail that will be paid for with a 0.2 percent sales tax passed last May.
About nine months of work on the architectural design will start this month, and a list of 24 design firms has been reduced to three, the sheriff said.
