MEXICAN NATIONAL CHARGED WITH MURDER OF 20-MONTH-OLD BOY
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has reported a Mexican National has been charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 20-month-old son.
Emmanuel Hernandez, 23, was booked late Tuesday night, May 21st after being transferred from the custody of immigration officials.
Hernandez was living with his girlfriend and her son, 20-month-old Enmanuel Gonzales, at 248 West 59th Street in Cut Off. On May 15, Gonzales was taken to a local hospital when it was discovered he was having trouble breathing. The child was subsequently transferred to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.
On Friday, May 17, representatives of Children’s Hospital contacted Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives in reference to Gonzales having stopped breathing, and informed detectives that his injuries and ailments were consistent with those associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Gonzales was eventually removed from life support over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents determined Hernandez did not have legal residency in the United States and detained him. Following further investigation into the incident, detectives obtained a warrant for Hernandez’s arrest for the 2nd degree murder of Enmanuel Gonzales. Hernandez was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on Tuesday night and booked as per the warrant.
He is now being held in lieu of $1 million bond as set by Judge F. Hugh Larose. The investigation into this case is continuing.
