The most important thing to know about spaying and neutering is that it saves lives. In every community in every state, there are animals sitting in shelters waiting for homes. Only about half of those dogs and cats will ever get one. The other half will be euthanized.
Each year, about 3.7 million animals are euthanized (American Humane Association). Five in 10 dogs and 7 in 10 cats in shelters are euthanized simply because there is no one to adopt them.
