Local furniture icon, Lefort Furniture, celebrates 70 years of business

In 1948, Camille Lefort quit the shrimping business to go to TV and Radio Repair School, against the advice of his father. In October of 1949, Camille opened his doors in a small bayou side shop in Cut Off to service the South Lafourche area.

Camille was known for his blue eyes and friendly service. In those days, he used to take a pirogue across the bayou to get to work every day.

Before the end of his life in 2009, he told his granddaughter Lauren, “My daddy told me I was stupid for quitting the shrimping business and going to TV and Radio Repair School, but I think I did ok for myself.”

He sure did, since Lefort’s is still going strong after 70 years in business. This makes it one of the oldest businesses still operating in the South Lafourche area.

A lot has changed in 70 years, but some things remain the same. Lefort Furniture moved their store to the corner of West 58th Street in 1960 and added on to the building to be what it is today. They don’t sell TV’s and Radio’s anymore, but they have a large selection of Furniture and Whirlpool brand Appliances for the home.

Camille’s son, Dean Lefort, started working at Lefort’s in 1974 and took over for his father in 1988. Camille’s granddaughter, Lauren Lefort Hand, has been working at Lefort’s for 13 years which makes this the third generation of Leforts to carry on Camille’s tradition. Above all Lefort’s still proudly serves their customers in the South Lafourche and Grand Isle areas with quality products and service after the sale.

For many years Lefort Furniture has offered their customers new and innovative products.

Camille expanded his business in 1950 when a gentleman from Walter Brothers in New Orleans showed up with the newly popularized invention, the television set, and told him to keep it. If he sold it, he could pay him later. Well the television was sold within a week and he ordered more making him one of the first in the tri-parish to sell television sets.

In the 1970’s, Lefort’s introduced the microwave oven to the parish and held cooking demonstrations to help customers become familiar with the newly popular appliance.

Lefort’s has been a Whirlpool Exclusive Dealer for over 60 years with Whirlpool being a leader in the appliance industry since 1911.

For over 40 years Lefort’s has sold La-Z-Boy products; La-Z-Boy today is the world’s leading manufacturer of reclining chairs and one of the largest producers of upholstered sofas, loveseats, chairs and ottomans.

Lefort Furniture also offers their customer America’s #1 Manufacturer of mattresses, Serta Mattresses. Serta Mattress has been an innovator in the bedding industry introducing the world to “Pillow Soft” mattresses, continuous coil innerspring design, and gel memory foam technology.

After so many years in business, Lefort’s has held true to a few things, and … they never charge for local delivery or set up; they offer a quality product; and they service everything they sell. The most important thing Lefort’s values is their customers. Dean is proud to carry on his father’s legacy by always taking care of his customers and the longevity of the business is a testament to Lefort’s loyal customers.

As a thank you for so many years in business, Lefort’s will be celebrating the entire month of October with a Storewide Sale. Every item in the store is marked down. Visit Lefort’s furniture on the corner of W. 58th for the great prices and friendly service that they have been known for since 1949.
