Lafourche Parish Public Library announce May 2019 events


Summer Reading Program begins May 28: The Lafourche Parish Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program begins May 28, bringing with it creative and entertaining activities and performances for people of all ages. This year’s program, A Universe of Stories, is spaced-themed and is replete with live-animal presentations, guest performers, escape room challenges, magic shows, art workshops, story hours, STEAM programming, and more. Remember to sign up early to set your reading goal and to register for those programs with limited space. Pick up a calendar of summer events at your local library branch.

Animal Tales returns to Lafourche library branches: Have you ever seen animals in the sky? Join our Animal Tales friends as they present animals that match constellations found in the night sky during Creatures of the Galaxy, a live-animal presentation that will visit the Lafourche Parish Public Library’s three main branches. Programs will be held at 10:30 a.m. on May 30 at the South Lafourche Branch Library; and at 1 p.m. on May 30 at the Lockport Branch Library.

Celebrate Mom at the library: All branches of the Lafourche Parish Public Library will host special Mother’s Day programs in May for people of all ages to celebrate Mom. Check out a sampling of Mother’s Day programs at these library branches.

Adults can create a wire-wrapped moon pendant symbolizing motherhood in celebration of Astronomy Week and Mother’s Day at 11 a.m. on May 8 at the Gheens Branch Library.

People of all ages can make a Mother’s Day craft for Mom using candy bars at 4:30 p.m. on May 10 at the Golden Meadow Branch Library.

Children and teens can decorate a personalized candle to give to Mom for Mother’s Day at 4 p.m. on May 8 at the Larose Branch Library.

Children and teens ages 7 to 17 can celebrate Mom by creating a special card for Mother’s Day at 2 p.m. on May 11 at the Lockport Branch Library.

Children can make a special Mother’s Day card using memories and found objects at 4 p.m. on May 9 at the Raceland Branch Library.

Families are invited to spend some quality time with Mom, Grandma, and any other special woman in their lives at the annual Mother’s Day Tea at 5:30 p.m. on May 9 at the South Lafourche Branch Library. Cake, tea, and other refreshments will be served.

Celebrate Police Week at the library: We’re celebrating Police Week at the library. Stop by at your local Lafourche Parish Public Library branch and celebrate, too.

Children can enjoy stories about safety and police and make walkie talkies out of recycled materials in celebration of Police Week at 4:30 p.m. on May 14 at the Gheens Branch Library.

The Golden Meadow Branch Library will host a special police-themed story hour to celebrate Police Week at 1 p.m. on May 14. Police officers in uniform can drop by the library May 13 through May 17 to receive a frozen treat, while supplies last.

Celebrate Police Week with a familiar face and a fun craft at 4 p.m. on May 15 at the Raceland Branch Library.

Celebrate Police Week with a visit from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. LPSO members will take part in special story hours at the Larose Branch Library at 1 p.m. on May 16 and later at 4 p.m. on May 16 at the South Lafourche Branch Library.

Staff from Lady of the Sea General Hospital’s Learning Center will conduct free anemia and blood pressure checks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 29 at the Larose Branch Library.

Adults wanting to better their English language skills can attend the Lockport Branch Library’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for non-native English speakers at 11 a.m. on May 8, May 15, May 22, and May 29. Learn basic English during these free and informal classes at the library.

Learn painting, collage, doodling, and more when guest artist Azalea Rivet visits the Raceland Branch Library at 4 p.m. on May 8 and on May 22.

In celebration of Get Caught Reading Month, children can enjoy stories about pets and bring their favorite stuffed animals to the Gheens Branch Library’s Get Caught Reading to Your Pet Tea Party at 4:30 p.m. on May 21.
