Lafourche Parish Libraries announce May events

Enjoy an up-close, hands-on experience with some of our wetland’s most important inhabitants when the Audubon Wetland Express visits the Lafourche Parish Public Library’s three main branches – South Lafourche, Lockport, and Thibodaux – in late May and early June.

Visits will take place at 10:30 a.m. on May 31 at the South Lafourche Branch, 16241 E. Main Street, in Cut Off; 1 p.m. on May 31 at the Lockport Branch, 720 Crescent Avenue; and at 10:30 a.m. on June 1 at the Thibodaux Branch, 705 W. Fifth Street.

This program is made possible thanks to an after-school STEAM grant from the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, and funded by the Dollar General Literacy Fund.

Children and teens can code, construct, create, and more with engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) resources at the Library, thanks to a $5,000 after-school STEAM grant. The library is one of 14 library systems across the country to receive a 2018 Strengthening Communities through Libraries grant from the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Every Monday through Thursday, Lafourche’s library branches host STEAM programs for children and teens in the afternoon. Check with your local branch for times.

The Library’s Summer Reading Program begins May 29. People of all ages can sign up and set summer reading goals, register for workshops with limited seating, and learn more about exciting programs being offered this summer. Some programs require registration, so sign up early.

The Gheens Branch, 153 N. Leon Drive, is hosting a photo contest for children ages 5 to 12, for teens, and for adults in May. Participants can submit a 5x7 or 8x10 photo that encompasses a Louisiana theme beginning May 1 for entry. The deadline to submit entries is May 25. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. on May 31 at the library. Refreshments will be served.

Submit a photo of your pet for entry into the South Lafourche Library’s Cute Pet Photo Contest from May 7 through May 14. You could win prizes for your pet. The contest winner will be announced on May 21. Photos can be dropped off at the library, or emailed to southlafourche@lafourche.org. Submitted photos will be displayed in the library.

Celebrate Lafourche’s French heritage with French Night at 5 p.m. on May 16 at the Lockport Library. Storytime will be hosted by local French teacher Nadia Talata, and families can make a special French-themed craft.

The Raceland Branch Library is seeking community members to read a favorite childhood story to be filmed for the library’s youngest readers. Drop by the library at 4 p.m. on May 17 to take part.

Staff from Lady of the Sea Hospital’s Learning Center will perform free blood pressure checks and hand out health information from 10 a.m. – noon on May 25 at the Golden Meadow Library.

Children and teens ages 8 to 16 can enjoy a sweet treat with free ice cream, while supplies last, at 3 p.m. on May 24 at the Gheens Library, to celebrate the upcoming summer.
