Anticipating a new tablet or smart phone for Christmas?
Make one of your holiday stops your local Lafourche Parish Public Library branch. Libraries these days aren’t just rows of book shelves.
The Lafourche Parish Public Library is always looking for new ways to add to its collection of digital resources for library users. Recently, the library subscribed to Hoopla, which allows users to borrow, instantly stream, and download free movies and TV episodes to their computers, smart phones, or tablets. Each library cardholder is allowed eight downloads per month.
Viewing choices range from anime to classics, children’s movies and TV to documentaries and comedies, and everything in between. The library began offering Hoopla in November as a way to expand on its movie and television DVD collections, which are popular with library users.
New releases aren’t available on this service, but there’s something for everyone.
Added benefits are not having to wait for an available copy, as all titles are available instantly, and an automatic return after three days, which means no late fees.

- Like music?
Download free music legally through the library using Freegal.
Library cardholders are allowed three free music downloads each week. Selections vary and include thousands of titles in numerous genres including rock, hip-hop, Top 40, pop, country, Cajun, classical, reggae, jazz, blues, Latin and more from the music catalog of Sony Music Entertainment.
The Freegal site allows users to hear a sample clip from each song before downloading, and it also keeps track of users’ past downloads so they can easily manage their music files.
This service does include newly-released music.
- Digital Magazines and eBooks
If you enjoy reading and are moving away from print media, try Zinio.
Access dozens of popular magazines, including current and some back issues, and download them for free to read on your phone, computer, or device.
The library also offers free access to thousands of eBooks and audiobooks, all available for download via the library’s website, through OverDrive and Axis 360. So if you’re a fan of eBooks and think that the library has nothing to offer you, think again.
To access these digital resources and many more, all you need is your library card number and a PIN. Stop by any Lafourche Parish library branch to establish a PIN for digital access.
Visit the library’s website at www.lafourche.org for more information.
