Lafourche Library announce upcoming June events


The Lafourche Parish Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program has begun, bringing with it creative and entertaining activities and performances for people of all ages. This year’s program, A Universe of Stories, is spaced-themed and is replete with guest performers, escape room challenges, magic shows, art workshops, story hours, STEAM programming, and more. Remember to sign up early to set your reading goal and to register for those programs with limited space.

Join the Library’s Escape Room challenge and race against the clock. Teams have 30 minutes to solve puzzles, follow clues, and unlock access to rocket fuel to “Escape to Outer Space!” Registration at your local branch is required to participate at the following locations:

- Gheens Branch, 153 N. Leon Drive: June 7, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

- Golden Meadow Branch, 1403 N. Bayou Drive: June 7, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

- Larose Branch, 305 E. Fifth Street: June 12, 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

- Raceland Branch, 177 Recreation Drive: June 7, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Don’t miss an action-packed and educational alien adventure using science experiments for special effects when Science Tellers’ “Aliens: Escape from Earth” visits the summer at the following locations. It’ll be totally out of this world.

- Holy Savior Catholic School Cafeteria, 201 Church Street, Lockport: June 6, 1 p.m.

- South Lafourche Library, Cut Off: June 6, 4 p.m.

Like magic? James Wand Secret Agent Magic Show to visit Lafourche libraries. Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to join James Wand on an exciting and hilarious adventure of magic and mystery. Help James solve clues and secret codes. Prepare to be amazed by the most incredible magic you will ever see at the following Lafourche locations:

- Lockport Branch: June 19, 1 p.m.

- South Lafourche Branch: June 19, 4 p.m.

Adults wanting to better their English language skills can attend the Lockport Library’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Learn basic English during these free and informal classes. Classes will be held at 11 a.m. on June 12, and June 26 at the library.

Representatives of Lady of the Sea Hospital’s Learning Center will be on hand at the South Lafourche Branch to offer its Safe Sitter program, a medically accurate instructional series that teaches young adolescents how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. This workshop is for girls and boys ages 10 to 13. Register at the South Lafourche Branch to reserve your spot in this workshop since space is limited. It will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 7, June 14, and June 21.

Representatives of Lady of the Sea Hospital’s Learning Center will provide info on men’s health in observance of Men’s Health Month at 3:30 p.m. on June 12. They will also be on hand to provide a free men’s fitness and nutrition program from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 13 in observance of Men’s Health Month.

Teens and adults can use recycled bottles to create imaginative alien terrariums at 4 p.m. on June 13.

Celebrate Men’s Health Month at 11 a.m. on June 14 at the Gheens Library. Staff will be demonstrating healthy options for juicing by making healthy blue smoothies and miniature recipe booklets. Enjoy a refreshing, healthy summer treat, while supplies last.

Enjoy an ice cream and toppings, while supplies last, and socialize with friends at 1 p.m. on June 14 at the Larose Branch’s Ice Cream Sundae Social.

Representatives from Lady of the Sea Hospital’s Learning Center will provide a kid’s safety program for library visitors in observance of National Safety Month at 11:15 a.m. on June 25.

Children and teens can craft balloon rockets using balloons and straws and race their creations against others at 12 p.m. on June 26.

Want to learn to sew? Drop by the Lockport Branch for Jr. Sewing 101, a sewing basics class for children and teens ages 7 to 17, at 11 a.m. on June 29. Registration is required to attend because space is limited. Sign up at the library or call (985) 532-3158.
