Lady Tarpons take momentum into district with rivalry win
In the dress rehearsal before district play, the South Lafourche girls’ basketball team showed it could beat a rival on the road.
The Lady Tarpons beat Central Lafourche 51-44 on Thursday night — a hard-fought win over a quality Class 5A foe.
With the win, the Lady Tarpons are now 10-6 on the season. It was their second win in two days — both against 5A competition.
It wasn’t easy.
The Lady Trojans are much improved and, unlike in recent years, are a worthwhile foe.
They challenged the Lady Tarpons with their physicality and kept the game relatively close throughout.
But in the end, South Lafourche’s strength in numbers prevailed to help secure the win.
Senior guard Makayla Bynum was huge in the win, logging 17 points. Sophomore Madison Ryan added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 steals.
Senior Bre’ylynn Jackson stepped up on the glass with post Na’laysia Mack out, logging 7 boards for an undersized South Lafourche team.
After missing Wednesday’s game with an injury, Ava Pitre returned and was sharp, posting 8 points. Guard Abbi Collins pitched in 6 for South Lafourche.
With the win, the Lady Tarpons take momentum into district play with three-straight wins.
South Lafourche’s first district test will be among their biggest — a road date at Ellender next Tuesday.
