Jindal signs school prayer bill
Last month Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law that allows prayer in schools outside of instructional hours. Lawmakers, elected officials and members of the Bastrop community gathered to watch as he signed the bill in their town.
House Bill 724, introduced earlier this year by State Rep. Katrina Jackson (D-Morehouse), states that school authorities may “permit public school students to gather for prayer before or after school or at any non-instructional time during the school day [and] provides for attendance by school employees, parents and persons from the community under certain circumstances.”
According to Jackson, the bill does include athletes who want to pray before / after games on the field. “However, this law does not include praying over the PA system before or after a game,” she said.
HB 724 becomes a law on August 1, 2013.
