Hit and run driver turns himself in

Lockport Chief of Police Warren Vedros has announced a Des Allemands man has been charged in the hit-and-run incident that occurred in Lockport last week.

Derek Gaubert, 22, of 106 Michael Drive in Des Allemands, turned himself over to authorities on Friday, November 8.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, a man, later identified as Gaubert, who was driving a white pickup truck, struck a fuel pump at the gas station located at 615 Crescent Avenue in Lockport.

Gaubert exited the vehicle and surveyed the damage, which included a broken tail light cover. He then fled the scene heading northbound on Crescent Avenue (LA Highway 1). The fuel pump was significantly damaged in the incident.

Prior to striking the fuel pump, Gaubert had made a purchase inside the convenience store and his photo was captured on a security camera. A family member informed Gaubert of the photo after it appeared on a local television newscast.

Gaubert turned himself in on Friday, November 8, and he was issued a criminal summons to appear in court on December 18.
