Highway Safety Checkpoint Slated For Wednesday

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office will conduct a Highway Safety Checkpoint during the daylight hours of Wednesday, November 6 in Lafourche Parish. Deputies will be checking motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations, expired inspection tags, expired/suspended driver's licenses, and other violations. This checkpoint is part of the year-long campaign designed to raise awareness for these types of violations and make the highways of Lafourche Parish safer for all motorists.  During the first month of the weekly checkpoints in October, around 2,200 vehicles passed through the four checkpoints resulting in the following:

48 expired Motor Vehicle Inspection stickers

16 seat belt violations

4 child restraint violations

3 with no Driver's License

2 Driving Under Suspension

2 Expired License Plates

1 Failure to Secure Registration

1 Misrepresentation during Issuance of a Citation

1 Motorcycle Helmet violation (helmet not DOTD-approved)

Sheriff Webre reminds drivers that the use of seat belts is always important and can mean the difference between life and death in crashes. Per Louisiana State law, upon conviction of the first offense, the driver faces a $25 fine including court costs, and any subsequent conviction carries a $50 fine including court costs.
