Gun seized from Golden Meadow student was an airsoft pistol
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, Golden Meadow Chief of Police Reggie Pitre, and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Matthews announced the gun seized from a Golden Meadow student’s backpack Friday morning was an airsoft pistol.
Through investigation, detectives learned the nine-year-old male student discovered the pistol in his book bag while riding on the school bus Friday morning. He reportedly became scared and nervous believing the pistol was a real firearm.
When he arrived at Golden Meadow Upper Elementary School, he immediately notified a teacher about the pistol. The bag was then turned over to School Resource Officers. Due to the realistic appearance of the pistol, it was not revealed to be an airsoft gun until deputies handled the weapon to secure it.
Investigators learned the student did not have knowledge of the pistol being in his bag. Regardless, he cannot be charged under Louisiana State law due to being under the age of 10. Investigators say they are continuing their investigation into how the pistol ended up in the backpack.
“I cannot imagine the fear a nine-year-old would experience after finding a pistol in a school bag,” said Sheriff Webre. “I commend this young man for overcoming his fear and doing the right thing. I also commend the actions of all those involved. While there was never any true danger, the situation was handled with the proper attention and respect.”
