In my younger years, I was a dedicated player for the Cut Off Biddy Basketball Association.
I loved basketball and thought the sport would be the main hobby of my future, but this thought came from a ten-year old, lacking the talent and height advantage to achieve this goal.
However, these future plans were more than obtainable for my good friend and teammate Traya Bruce.
If you have resided in the bayou region within the last ten years, you have most likely heard her name. Traya has received countless awards throughout her basketball career, from Biddy All American every year to MVP of the district this year.
Some of Traya's accomplishments include winning Miss Biddy after her team won the international championship as a twelve-year old and receiving MVP of the state middle school tournament as an eighth grader.
During her high school career, Traya has started on varsity every year. She won Honorable Mention All-District as a ninth grader, first team All Region and second team All State as a tenth grader, and was the region three-point champion in ninth and tenth grade.
In tenth grade, Traya was also named the Barker Honda Athlete of The Year and was a nominee for this award and for MVP of the region in eleventh grade.
The above awards are simply a brief insight to the many other achievements Traya has been recognized for.
As a result of her hard work and dedication, she has been invited to represent Louisiana Girls Basketball on the Central Conference Team competing at the 2017 Down Under Hoops Classic hosted on the Gold Coast of Australia on July 10, 2017.
Traya will spend nine days traveling and competing for the 2017 Down Under Hoops Classic Championship title in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast with teammates from across the world.
When asked how this one experience would benefit her future basketball plans, Traya replied, "I feel like this experience will help me grow as a player and a leader. I am hoping to learn different things from coaches all over the world to bring back to my teammates and kids I work with to help everyone get better. You never know, one day I may want to play overseas and this will definitely help with that decision."
It has been a pleasure to watch my friend grow into the talented basketball player she is today, and it is fulfilling to know that she will be able to enhance her talent and broaden her skills on this once-in-a-lifetime trip with her humbled spirit and intense commitment and love for the sport.
If you are interested in helping support Traya on her trip to Australia, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call (985) 696-4341.
She will also be hosting a basketball camp for all ages on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, at the Cut Off Youth Center to help with her trip expenses.
