Fort Polk brigade sending 1,230 to Afghanistan

FORT POLK, La. (AP) — About 1,230 officers and soldiers from the infantry brigade combat team based at Fort Polk will be heading to Afghanistan as advisers in early July, the Army says.

Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander of the 10th Mountain Division, is coming from Fort Drum, N.Y., for Friday's deployment ceremony for the division's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Capt. William Brink, the brigade spokesman, said Monday.

This deployment won't involve all 3,400 soldiers in the 4th of the 10th. Brink said small teams of officers and non-commissioned officers will advise their counterparts in the Afghan army's equivalent of a battalion.

"We replicate their staff and advise them on the finer points," he said.

The deployment announced June 7 will be the brigade's fourth since it was officially activated at Fort Polk in January 2005.

The brigade went to Iraq in November 2007 and to Afghanistan in October 2010. Several formations within the brigade operated in Afghanistan throughout 2006 and 2007.
