Members of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office Explorer POST 323 participated in the annual Winterfest Conference this past weekend in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The annual conference took place from February 7 through February 9, and is organized by the Boy Scouts of America.

Sixteen young men and women represented Lafourche Parish by participating in social and competitive activities throughout the weekend.

Competitions included handling crime scenes, domestic violence and bomb threat response, and they also attended and contributed to a regional Explorer roundtable discussion.

The Explorers were accompanied by personnel from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office, as well as members of The Supporters of POST 323, a non-profit group comprised of parents of Explorers.

In addition to assisting with supervision during the conference, this group helps raise funding for the program. The group, for example, covers some expenses for the annual conference, ensuring all Explorers selected to attend the conference can do so regardless of financial means.

Explorers are selected for the annual trip as a reward for their hard work. To earn the opportunity to attend conference, Explorers must take part in various community service events throughout the year including Child ID programs and assisting with parking at various community events.

Some upcoming local events in which Explorers from POST 323 will be participating are:

-Saturday, February 22: leading the Krewe of Ambrosia night parade in Thibodaux

-March 14-16: assisting with parking at the Choctaw Fireman's Fair

-Sunday, March 16: presenting flags for the National Anthem at the New Orleans Pelicans game versus the Boston Celtics

-Saturday, March 22: Child ID services at Raceland Upper Elementary School's 13th Annual 5K for Education

-Saturday, March 29: Child ID services at 6th Annual MAX Charter School "Race for their Future" 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run in Thibodaux.
