Callais Cablevision Channel 5 ahead of its time

Callais Cablevision Channel 5 ahead of its time

I recently became aware of the fact that several TV stations have begun to show high school football on televisions.

I am happy to see this valuable motivation to participate in athletic activity for high school students. Keep in mind aside from football, 10 times the number of students participate in the band, pep squad, dance teams and other activities associated with the sport.

All of these activities provide physical outlets for our youth. Naturally, because of so many children being involved, parents are also involved.

Over 40 years ago, Channel 5 of Callais Cablevision aired high school football and other activities associated with it on local TV. There was tremendous public interest and support for local high schools and their teams.

Channel 5 did not have the wonderful film crews, equipment, modern technology or the resources of the national broadcasting companies. However, we did not have one of the first female broadcasters, Tina DeSalvo Callais. She did interviews and play by play broadcasting of the games.

Lafourche Parish, particularly the 10th Ward, should be proud of this accomplishment.
