BTNEP To Conduct A Build A Rain Barrel Workshop
The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program will be conducting a Build Your Own Rain Barrel workshop on October 12 from 9–10:30 a.m. at the Nicholls State University Farm located at 104 Thoroughbred Drive, Thibodaux.
Participants will be constructing their own barrels and will be able to take it home with them. The price of the workshop is $45 and includes a 35-gallon barrel and all the materials needed. Participants will be shown step by step how to build their own rain barrel and learn how to install it at home.
The purpose of the rain barrel is to place it under a gutter’s downspout in order to collect rainwater from the roof. The water collected in the barrels can be used to water your lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees. Rainwater harvesting can help save money on your water bill, and reduce flooding in local waterways.
To address the concern of mosquitoes, barrels will have a six inch screened opening on top. Mosquito dunks are also recommended. Mosquito dunks are larvicides made from bacteria to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching.
For more information about the workshop or to register, please call 985-447-0868. Space is limited to the first 20.
