Bourg man charged after investigation finds cell phone distraction caused fatal accident
Houma, La. – After a continued investigation into a fatal crash that occurred on April 15, Troopers arrested Brodie Matherne Thursday for several charges including negligent homicide.
Troopers had obtained a search warrant for Matherne’s cell phone and through investigative means, were able to determine that he was distracted by the phone while driving, causing the accident.
An arrest warrant was obtained for Matherne and he was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Correctional Facility on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, texting while driving, and driving left of center.
The two-vehicle crash occurred around 2 a.m. April 15, on LA 659 just north of LA 24, taking the life of 52-year old Roy Neil of Montegut.
The preliminary investigation revealed 26-year old Matherne of Bourg was traveling north on LA 659 in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. Neil was traveling south on LA 659 in a 2014 Nissan Altima when Matherne crossed the center line and struck Neil’s vehicle head-on. Neil was properly restrained during the crash, but suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.
