Bassmasters record successful June tournament

Bassmasters record successful June tournament

The South Lafourche Bassmasters' June club tournament was a welcomed change from the past few months. The bass cooperated for the 14 members and 2 guests who showed up on June 22 out of Cannon’s Landing in Houma.

At daybreak however, conditions seemed unfavorable.  The weather called for a slight breeze and rain likely during the day.  Highs were expected to top 90 degrees.

The Atchafalaya River, which influences the canals and bayous around Bayou Black, contributed high tides and stained to muddy water.   Water temps averaged 86 degrees and the tide rose all day.

Several teams decided to make long runs to clearer water, finding good keepers to weigh.

Forty-two bass of 12-inch minimum size or longer were brought to the scale.  Average weight per fish was 1.38-lbs.  Forty bass were returned to the water alive.

Frank Barfield and Jacob Dufrene teamed up to catch a 10 fish weight of 16.38 lbs. out of Temple Bay in Lake Salvador.

Buster Avera and Craig Thibodaux ran to Turtle Bayou to bag a combined weight of 15.56 lbs.

Chuck Colombel had a nice lunker bass weighing 4.24 lbs. which he pulled out of the Orange Grove area.

Most fishermen said they caught bass on spinnerbaits and flukes, with some using swimbaits to catch their fish.  Some even tried flipping and punching heavy cover around cuts where water was moving in or out of the marsh.

A stong, lightning-filled rain shower passed through the area around 1:30 p.m. causing some to end their day early for safety’s sake.

Thanks to Brock Bennett and Craig Thibodaux for being guests of the club.  The club welcomed its newest member Tyler Rivet who joined on tournament day.

Top six weights for June were as follows:

Frank Barfield (4 fish), 10.12 lbs.; Buster Avera (5), 7.41 lbs.; Jacob Dufrene (5), 6.26 lbs.; Chuck Colombel (2), 5.37 lbs.; Tate Orgeron (4), 5.35 lbs.; and Chad Colombel (4), 4.67 lbs.

Top six standings for the year are:

Chad Colombel, 288 (6 tournaments); Mike Barfield, 275 (6); Jacob Dufrene, 235 (5); Frank Barfield, 230 (5); Chuck Colombel, 228 (5); and Buster Avera, 189 (4).

There are six tournaments left for 2013, with the next event to be held at Doiron's in Stephensville on July 20th.

Bassmasters’ next meeting will be at Lane's Place, on Thursday June 27th, at 7 p.m.
