August Vegas inducted into Sports Hall of Fame
Holy Cross High School of New Orleans conducted its annual Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on November 2. Among those inducted into the Hall of Fame was August Vegas of Larose.
In Vegas’ first year wrestling, as an eighth grader, he was undefeated until the state finals where he competed against a senior. He was beaten in a close competition and won Second Place in State. This was his first and only loss in 5 years during his Holy Cross competitions.
In 1964 he was selected as Most Improved Wrestler at the State Finals. In 1966, in his senior year, Vegas was Tri-Captain, won First Place in the New Orleans’ First City Wrestling Championship and won his fourth First Place State Title. He was selected as the Most Valuable Wrestler in 1966 at the Holy Cross Sports Banquet.
His accomplishments include a five-year letterman in wrestling. He was a four-time State Champion from 1963 until 1966. Vegas maintained the most state titles in 70 years of wrestling at Holy Cross High School.
