One of eighteen Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) arrests in Lafourche Parish over a four-day period was of a man from Bourg who was arrested for his fourth DWI offense while driving under suspension for his third.

Kevin Brunet, 43, of 286 Smoky Court, was arrested early last Saturday morning, December 15th after trying to run away during a traffic stop.

Shortly after 4 a.m., deputies were traveling along LA Highway 316 in Bayou Blue when they noticed a car traveling with the driver’s side headlight off. The car’s driver, later identified as Brunet, stopped, and then immediately exited and began to flee the scene on foot.

As deputies pursued Brunet, he crossed over LA Highway 182 and eventually attempted to scale a wooden fence, but fell down, damaging the fence in the process.

Deputies apprehended him and immediately noticed a strong odor of alcoholic. Deputies discovered Brunet had been driving under suspension from his third DWI offense and did not have insurance.

Brunet refused to submit to a Standardized Field Sobriety Test or a breathalyzer test, and so, deputies obtained a warrant for a blood test which was subsequently conducted. Results are pending.

Brunet was arrested and booked with DWI (4th offense), resisting an officer, driving under suspension, no insurance, no headlight, and simple criminal damage to property.

He is currently being held in lieu of $81,400 bond as set by Judge Walter Lanier III. Brunet is also being held for the Louisiana Department of Probation and Parole.

According to booking records, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Thibodaux Police Department and Louisiana State Police charged a combined total of 18 impaired drivers with DWI offenses in Lafourche Parish over a four-day period from Thursday, December 13 through Sunday, December 16.

Law enforcement agencies have been ramping up DWI enforcement efforts as part of the Louisiana State Police’s Zero for December campaign aiming for ZERO fatal crashes caused by impaired drivers during the entire month of December.

“While we are certainly proud of these efforts, we are also disappointed to see so many people making bad decisions, especially with the holidays right around the corner,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “Hopefully these arrests will send a strong message to those thinking about getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks during the holiday.”

“Our deputies are responding to over 1,000 complaints each week, but we are also doing our part, in cooperation with our fellow agencies, to remove impaired drivers from the streets. We want to ensure that our citizens are safe and truly enjoy this holiday season without having to deal with the tragedy of losing a loved one due to impaired driving,” continued Webre.

He also reminded residents about the no refusal policy in Lafourche Parish.

“Our deputies have made it clear that if you refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test, we will ask for a search warrant to test your blood alcohol level,” said Sheriff Webre.

Anyone who sees reckless driving on the roads of Lafourche Parish is urged to call 911 immediately to report it.
