Annual celebration of classic cars under way on Miss coast

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Gulf Coast's annual celebration of hotrods and classic cars is getting under way.
Cruisin' the Coast runs Oct. 4-11 this year.

The festival has been growing since its start in 1996, when 374 vehicles were registered. Cruisin' the Coast officials are hoping good weather and low gasoline prices will help bring the number of registrants to 7,500, WLOX-TV reported.

Meanwhile, police in Biloxi will be sporting fancy wheels of their own: four new Harley motorcycles and six new white SUVs that are likely to draw attention during the festival.

It's coincidence that the new vehicles were delivered in time for the festival, Police Chief John Miller told The Sun-Herald.

The event draws people neighboring Louisiana and around the country.

"It's a mixture of everything," Walter Theriot, of Sunset, Louisiana, said. "Family, friends ... anybody. Anybody that's got a car that wants to come, we'd be glad to have them."

This is only the second Cruisin' the Coast for Brett Mire, another Louisiana resident, who showed up early with family to help set up for the others yet to come.

"I go to car shows all the time back home," Mire said. "But it's only for like a day. But this is like a week-long thing you see thousands and thousands of different cars, trucks, bikes all kinds of things."
